Patellar Tendonitis – “Jumper’s Knee”

What is it?

The quadriceps tendon is a thick band of fibrous tissue which extends from the quadriceps muscles, located at the front of the thigh, to the upper portion of the knee cap (patella). As the quadriceps tendon continues over the patella it forms the patellar tendon as it attaches to the shin bone (tibia).

Inflammation occurs when the tendon and surrounding structures become irritated and inflamed. Pain and/or tenderness is usually felt in the area below the knee cap and tends to intensify with deep knee bending, squatting and/or jumping.

What causes it?

  • Extreme tension on the knee extensors (ie. jumping, kicking and running)
  • Overuse
  • Poor mechanics
  • Muscle imbalance

What does treatment involve? (may include 1 or all of the following)

Patellevator Knee Brace Toronto

Levy Knee Brace Toronto

Kneed-It Knee Brace Toronto

Patellevator®

Levy Knee Strap
