Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome - “Shin Splintsâ€
What is it?
“Shin splints†is a term given to the symptom of pain over the front of the shin bone (tibia). Pain occurs when the tendons and the attachments of the tendons to the bone become irritated. A dull ache or pain may be experience during activity or after activity.
What causes it?
- Overuse – sudden increase in frequency, duration and/or intensity of training
- Stress Fractures
- Overpronation
- Improper footwear
What does treatment involve? (may include 1 or all of the following)
- Rest
- Cold therapy
- Physiotherapy / Massage Therapy
- Orthotics
