What is it?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome occurs when the median nerve is compressed as it runs through the wrist via the carpal tunnel. The median nerve is responsible for movement and feeling in the thumb and first three fingers. Swelling and/or narrowing of the carpal tunnel may cause Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Symptoms include tingling, tightness, weakness and/or pain in the hand.
What causes it?
- Overuse – repeated wrist motion including:
- Computer use - typing
- Gardening
- Manual work / Shop work
- Racquet Sports
- Systemic Conditions – ie. Diabetis, Arthritis
- Pregnancy
What does treatment involve? (may include 1 or all of the following)
- Ice
- Anti-inflammatories as prescribed by a physician
- Physiotherapy
- Surgery
