deQuervian's Tenosynovitis

What is it?

DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis occurs when the synovium and tendons responsible for movement of the thumb are inflamed. Pain is localized to the wrist at the base of the thumb and is present during thumb movement.

What causes it?

  • Excess wrist motion
  • Often seen in new mothers as the motion of picking up a baby can irritate these tendons.

What does treatment involve? (may include 1 or all of the following)

  • Ice
  • Anti-inflammatories as prescribed by a physician
  • Physiotherapy
