What is it?
The first metatarsal bone is disproportionately short and cannot provide adequate stability. Consequently, the second metatarsal bone is forced to bear additional pressure. At toe-off, the arch of the foot and the ankle often roll down and inward (eversion) until the short first metatarsal contacts the ground. This exaggerated movement can lead to excessive pronation, ankle eversion and internal tibial knee strain.
What causes it?
- Congenital
- Post-operative bunion surgery
